Strengthening Formative Learning

Formatives and summative are the buzzword in today’s educational circles. All the stake holders of education have attached different connotations to these words. Education is in its transition state and this transformation has brought along an increased sense of apprehension in some people and some have welcomed the changes with open arms and a sigh of relief.
The need of the hour is to have a 3600 view of this word “formative”, to peep into its soul, to absorb its real essence and implement it comprehensively. During the learning process there are certain gaps which remain due to students’ different learning patterns. Identifying and filling these gaps leads to formative learning. It is said that “beauty lies in this eyes of the beholder” hence the beauty of this word from different eyes may reveal starkly opposite descriptions. It’s the perspective which makes the difference. Let’s have a few glances of various stake holders of education on it.

A TEACHER
View
·      Might look at the teaching learning process as an additional labour
·      Might  feel the pressure of increased documentation

·      May feel threatened by the new age learner who has the world of knowledge at the click of mouse
·      May resist change from lecture made to discussion mode
·      May feel integrating technology a harassing task

     Counter view

The Power Of SRI SRI

It was 21st of July 2010. An ordinary day at School was in progress. I was meeting it up by gathering requisite energy through my will power. Past one week had witnessed an enervated me due to medical reasons.
It was the day scheduled for a shooting of “Art of living” “YES  course experiences” to be done at school. During the course of the day I learnt that the team is unable to come to the school and hence I was requested to reach the site for shoot which happened to be far off from the school.
Being new to the city and an owner of terrible road sense, all voices from within screamed “RUPAM  AVOID IT!!!” Hence I was all set, armed with my convincing skills to influence my intent on the person at the other end of the phone line, just to realize in a short span that the latter owned better skills. I was given detailed directions to reach which my grey matter could not hold for long and I desperately tried looking in for someone who could realign the information. It was that time of the day when all the school drivers were out on the route. Suddenly I saw a driver at the school gate .His duty for the day had finished and he was all set to go home. He stopped after seeing a puzzled look at my face and after a brief talk smilingly consented to drive for me. I took a sigh of relief and thanked God for his messenger.
I ventured to the roads unknown and cursed myself every bit as I came close to the destination. “Anand Parvat”as the name suggested was a real PARVAT sans any ANAND!! The topsy turvy roads finally led me to the desired site. The first breeze of happiness swiftly brushed me. It was a cool location with nature all around. I found a bunch of happy students and a harried director. As I turned, to my delight, I found a familiar bright smiling face walking up to me and greeted me with an embrace .I forgot all my agony and was all set for the shoot. The Director took a while to digest, the fact, that the lady standing there is actually a Principal of the school and a bite had to be taken.  Disapprovingly though he reset the backdrop and added extra features to the camera so that it could match the designation.
He said ‘CAMERA ROLLING’ ……. ACTION…and I began speaking …. Immersed into my emotions attached to the course …. Suddenly I found the director’s expressions changing. I startled and stopped…. to realize that the green colour of my duppatta was matching the backdrop which was to his distaste. The green lining of my duppatta was meticulously folded and the camera started rolling again . I again plunged into the deep sea of my attachment to AOL and started extempore when a loud sound of CUT!!! diverted my attention. This time it was a FLY  which co-starred and triggered the bitter taste buds of the director. I felt driven to my wits end and hence with my Principal like sternness gave an ultimatum that I will give just one more take and walk off. The poor director subdued to the pressure and agreed to do away the elaborate settings and take a shoot amidst nature where flies were not prosecuted for trespassing. I thanked the team and started for home and what happened after that was MAGICAL!!
I returned that day two hours late than usual and in the normal course should have been flat on my bed into deep sleep within minutes but to my dismay I started cleaning up my house which was crying for attention for past one week. An hour and half of concentrated drive made my house look mesmerizing!! Powered by unknown energy I also finished the backlog of my household chores. My 12 year old also experienced, the comparatively reasonable side of me which happens rarely.(  I strongly feel sometimes that he will grow up to author a book on “Difficulty of being a Principal’s son”)
The day had not finished hence a lot more was in store. I checked out my mail to find that I was one of the 50 principals whom CBSE had selected to be a part of an exclusive workshop. My heart danced and I instantly communicated this to the school’s manager who reciprocated it with the same cheer, for obvious reasons ofcourse as he was the one who expressed his keen desire of me joining this course and had promised every effort possible to see me enrolled.
It was 10:30 at night and I was more refreshed then ever , reviewed my day which started at 4 in the morning , closed my eyes trying to figure out the source of this new found energy!!
I
